WW2 RAAF Radar Station – Exploratory Bushwalk: WW2 Relics.

We kindly received permission from the owners to visit the site of a former Royal Australian Air Force radar station (part of No.42 Radar Wing), which formed a line of northern air defence radars set up following the Japanese attacks on Darwin, Broome and Horn Island in 1942-43. The station operated from 1943-1945 and during its operational life it did not log a single enemy plot. However, the radar provided key support to RAAF Catalina “Black Cat” sorties out of Townsville and Cairns to Rabaul and Japanese held islands in New Guinea and the Solomons. As the threat of invasion diminished, operational hours at the station were reduced until final closure in 1945. Substantial remains of the installation exist at the site. Thanks for watching and please take the time to visit our blog www.nqexplorers.com

  4. Thanks for taking the time to comment Mr T, would have been interesting to detect but from what we gather the camp area has been totally destroyed, bulldozed and carted off. Glad you found the old ruins interesting, lots of WW2 relics up your way for sure, planning a trip to the ‘Top End’ next year. HH and best wishes mate.

  15. Thanks for your kind comments Flouridekid, our area is dotted with WW2 camp sites and airstrips, most of them in very remote spots and pretty much ‘undisturbed’, always a lot of fun to explore. HH and best wishes mate.

  19. Agree entirely Robsue, all sorts of rumours of Japanese landings/camps on the Cape too. I’m sure it happened. Maybe one day I’ll stumble across a Japanese camp and find some interesting relics and prove it. HH mate and best of luck.

  30. Thanks for that great comment GemQ, amazing how, even after all these years, we all have experiences of relatives or people we know who were effected by the experience of the war. You are right – we are very lucky not to have had to face what they did and what they gave up. HH mate.

  39. Another story on Australia’s past… great intro with lots of fascinating history on WWII. I appreciate this because it contained news that I knew nothing about, though I don’t know a lot about Australia anyway. Always enjoyable to sit back and watch your videos, so thanks for sharing and I’m looking forward to your next production 😀

  42. An excellent video NQ.

It always seemed to me that we didn’t kow the full extent of the Japanese attacks against Australia until more recent times, as if, the history was being guarded. It’s little wonder we have “war games” in a mythical land called Kumara? up north annually. Although warfare has modifed, the use of infantry invading Northern Australia is still a part of tactical warfare for some nations.

    Ooh, my big military rave!
